General Information

Project title: Downtown Autonomous Vehicle Transit Study
Project description: Small-scale autonomous transit is currently being tested in limited markets in the United States. It has significant potential in small areas that need better headways and more flexible service than a standard transit system could provide. The project would be to study three areas to determine if this new technology is viable in Kansas City, KS. The three study areas would be: Downtown KCK, Village West, and the University of Kansas Medical Center. These three areas are compact enough and have enough population and visitor traffic that the autonomous vehicles could be of significant benefit to the areas. The study would examine the scope of the area, flexible routes based on time of day or special events, const comparison to standard transit service, cost savings over current service, how well the services can meet community goals, including serving mobility challenged populations, and potential funding sources. It would also include a public engagement process in the three study areas to determine potential usage and utilization. The autonomous vehicle concepts

Project Scope: The scope of this project would be to study the use of autonomous vehicle transit in three areas of Wyandotte County: downtown, Village West, and The University of Kansas Medical Center. The studies of each area would include a complete public engagement process to determine potential usage and utilization. The long-term goal, following the feasibility study is a five-year pilot program for five autonomous vehicles, which would be one of, if not the first of its kind in the US.
