Join us on Sept. 24, 2018 for an Advocacy Training workshop for nonprofits with a priority of serving older adults, sponsored by Kansas City Leaders in Aging Network and authorized by Jackson County Cares, Bob Hill, Treasurer.

Nonprofit organizations serving seniors should play an important role in identifying and advocating for policies that help to support older adults and the communities in which they live, yet many organizations are cautious about engaging in advocacy. This workshop seeks to clear up many of the myths that prevent organizations from becoming more actively engaged in policy and to educate participants about current local and state issues affecting seniors in the Kansas City area.

Join us at this workshop to learn about:

  • Rules that govern nonprofit engagement in advocacy, lobbying and nonpartisan election activities.
    • David O. Renz, Ph.D., Director, Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership at UMKC
  • Jackson County Cares, a ballot initiative that would establish a Senior Citizens’ Services Fund in Jackson County, Missouri.
    • Pam Seymour, Executive Director, Shepherd’s Center Central
  • Fiscal and budgetary issues impacting seniors in Missouri, including recent cuts to home and community-based services and MORX.
    • Lindsey Baker, Director of Research, Missouri Budget Project
  • AARP Legislative Priorities in Kansas and Missouri
    • Jay Hardenbrook, Associate State Director for Advocacy, AARP Missouri
    • Ernie Kutzley, Kansas Advocacy Director, AARP

This workshop is relevant to all board, staff and volunteers affiliated with nonprofit organizations that provide services to older adults.
