One of the most important functions in HazMat emergency response is the safety of response personnel at the scene. From the seasoned incident commander to the rookie emergency responder, "street smart" safety should be a primary focus of emergency operations.

The course provides a practical approach to sizing up a HazMat emergency. The course helps participants develop practical site and emergency safety plans that can be implemented at any level from company officer to a complex multi-agency operation.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand safety as a process involving the six elemental P's (policy, prevention, preparedness, procedures, performance, practice).
  • Understand whatHazMatsafety officers need to know to perform their duty as it relates to the National Incident Management System (NIMS), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
  • Given a scenario, the student acting as the hazardous materials safety officer will be able to determine emergency scene safety based on current OSHA regulations.
  • Given a scenario, the student will be able to determine whether the area is safe, unsafe or in imminent danger.
  • The student will be able to identify the six conditions immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) at an emergency scene and determine whether to alter, suspend or terminate the incident.
